The origin of the Doukhobors dates back to 17th & 18th century Russia. The name translates to “spirit wrestler”. The Christian sect emphasizes on obeying the light from within and rejecting civil authority. Towards the end of the 19th, 7,500 Doukhobor people fled religious persecution in Russia and sought refuge in Canada. This group was led Peter Vasilevich Verigin.
